The Quinte Ballet School of Canada is founded on a comprehensive, classical training curriculum that is very carefully coordinated to the student's ability. The School has a unique training programme with specialized teaching staff who work collectively with the students. The development of the students is planned yearly and their progress is monitored weekly. Classes are conducted thirty-seven weeks per year beginning after Labour Day and finishing in mid June. Students have approximately eighteen to thirty hours of classes per week, depending on their level.
In order to graduate from the Quinte Ballet School of Canada, a student must achieve a Level 6 or 6A standing after spending at least one full school year at QBSC, with an unblemished attendance record and have successfully achieved an Advanced 1 Cecchetti examination level.
Approved by the Quinte Ballet School of Canada's Board of Directors dated May 15, 2007
Formal evaluations are conducted twice a year to inform students and parents of progress, as well as areas of concern. The School feels strongly that both the parents and students are equally committed to the programme in order to ensure success. Students are required to take the full programme appropriate for their level. The programme is comprised of three semesters annually: fall, winter and summer. The curriculum includes Ballet Technique, Pointe Work, Male Work, Centre Work, Pas de Deux, Classical Repertoire, Jazz, Moderne, Syllabus, Stretch & Strength, Specific Coaching and the study and performance of Repertoire and new creations.
Scholarships and financial aid are available to qualifying students in the professional programme.
The academic needs of the full-time students are met by the Hastings & Prince Edward District School Board however, other options are available. Quinte Ballet School of Canada staff, in close coordination with the schools involved, have developed and implemented an academic programme for the students that allows for attendance at daytime dance classes. Students enrolled in elementary school attend Sir Mackenzie Bowell. High school students attend Centennial Secondary School.
The School operates a billet programme with many local families providing accommodation for students.
Each year, a "buddy system" is organized for first year students to provide a support network and to help ease the transition for those away from home, often for the first time. Excursions to see professional dance, music or theatre presentations are organized for the students. Students also participate in outreach programmes within the community which help to promote a better understanding of dance.
