Petites Assemblés Program (Ages 3-5)

Petites Assemblés Program is meant for the very young and is an introduction to the world of ballet and dance.

Our Petites classes are pre-ballet.  Students will learn the concepts and foundation of ballet through:
  • play and interactive games to build strength and balance.
  • Basic music theory. ie) learning to count with the beat and counting in phases of 8.
  • Independent Study ie) dancers learn to be independent from their parents from day one
  • Basic vocabulary & anatomy related to dance
  • Spatial awareness. Ie) forming lines & cross floor
  • Basic movement patterning

What to Expect:

We ask that parents respect our policy of no parents/caregivers in the studio during class.  We have this rule because it is important for children to learn, from the very start, how to focus on themselves and what they are doing.  Even a face peering through the window can distract the entire class.  At the end of terms 1 & 2, parents are invited into the studio and dancers will have their first experience of giving a “performance”.  At the end of Term 3, we have an extra special performance followed by a tea party.

You may wonder why our Petites do not perform in our Dance of Spring, year end recital.  This is because at this young age, the full theatre experience can be scary, with bright lights, dark spaces and bodies moving very quickly. As mentioned, in Term 3 we have our Petites Assemblé Spring Show and Tea.  This is an in-house performance specifically for the littles, where they will perform in costume and receive their certificates of completion.

Often it takes a few weeks for a new student to get familiar with the studio setting and being independent from mom or dad.  We would be grateful for your leadership to help with this transition, a quick chat ahead of time to let them know what to expect, as well as not lingering in the studio when dropping off to class, helps tremendously.

We sell uniform items through our office.  Petites do not have to wear the leotards we sell; any white tank style leotard is acceptable.  We do however, strongly recommend getting ballet slippers through us as the brand and style we sell are ideal.  We are asked often why students do not wear tights at this age. The first reason is practical, children at this age pull and pick at everything which is distracting and the tights end up with holes. The second is that students have to learn how to see exactly how their legs and knees are working, bare legs enables them to do so more easily.  Underwear is not required under their leotard (would you put them on under a swim suit?) but we understand why parents choose to leave them on, ideally, they are not be bright patterns &/or colours.  A form fitting ballet wrap sweater is good if your child wants some extra warmth, however, we keep our studios toasty for the little ones and is usually not necessary.
